Bern Symposium on motor behaviour in schizophrenia

UniBern

Thursday, August 30th 2012

Auditorium Wölfli, University Hospital of Psychiatry, Bern, Switzerland

Dear Colleagues,

we would like to invite you to an exciting symposium on motor behaviour in schizophrenia. Motor symptoms are highly prevalent in across the course of schizophrenia spectrum disorders, ocurring in both treated and untreated patients. Motor symptoms in schizophrenia include abnormal involuntary movements (e.g. dyskinesias), parkinsonism, so-called soft neurological signs, catatonia, psychomotor slowing, disturbances of volition and action planning. Despite the high prevalence, motor phenomena go widely unrecognized in clinical practice. Still, motor symptoms such as dyskinesia and gait disorders may strongly impair quality of life. In the upcoming DSM-V, motor symptoms will be included as one dimension of schizophrenia.
International experts in the field will present their recent work. The topics will cover prevalence and clinical significance of motor disorders in schizophrenia, as well as the neurobiology of schizophrenia motor symptoms. The symposium welcomes the specialists (psychiatrists, neurologists and psychologists) as well as general practioners and students.
